November 2009 - March 2010 Chronicles

Fr. Ferdinand Ragasa is this month’s Recollection Facilitator

The ICST community before finally ending this school year underwent a recollection on March 12-13.  It was Fr. Ferdinand Ragasa who facilitated the recollection of the seminarians.  The spiritual recollection centered on “keeping one’s spark in the spiritual life”.  He started with a conference in the evening of March 12 and continued on with another conference the following day. He shared more of his experiences in the priestly life and from these experiences, reflections were drawn. According to him, it is prayer that keeps him strong and alive in his ministry.  On the second day, the seminarians were given the time to assess their spiritual life through journal writing. It was a fruitful weekend for the seminarians and a good occasion to finish the school year.
Fr. Ragasa is a priest of the Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia.  He is presently the Chancellor of the said archdiocese and the Superintendent of the Archdiocesan Catholic Schools.  Fr. Ragasa is an alumnus of ICST (1990).

Fr. Soc expresses his love to seminarians

“I readily accepted the invitation of Fr. Rector to preside over this mass because I want you to know how much I love you, how much your bishops love you, dear seminarians.” These were the words of Most Rev. Socrates Villegas (Fr. Soc as he would like to be called) of the Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan during the Lectorate-Acolytate Installations of the 1st Year and 2nd Year seminarians of ICST held last February 22, 2010, feast of the Chair of St. Peter at ICST Main Chapel. “As the seminary is the heart of the Diocese, so the seminarians the heart of bishops,” he continued.

With the theme Servire in Caritate et Veritate (Serve in Love and Truth), the bishop challenged seminarians to be honest and true to their ministries. In his homily, he pointed out three essential P’s to be carried out by Lectors and Acolytes necessary in their future ministry as priests. These are Primacy through Love, Purity of Truth and Perfection in Service or Holiness under the shadow of St. Peter.

After the mass, Lavern Tarubal, together with Russel Habungan, the beadles of the Neophytes and Sophomores, respectively, awarded a Certificate of Appreciation and handed a token of gratitude to the presiding prelate. A simple snack was served after at the seminary main dining hall.

The celebration was attended to by some parents, benefactors and friends of ICST.

Classes go for recollection

The spiritual life of the seminarians needs continuous nourishment.  Aside from the celebrations of the sacraments and other liturgical activities, spiritual recollection plays a vital and lasting effect in the spiritual life.

The different classes underwent a recollection on 19-20 this February.  The Ubbog class moved to the St. Joseph building in the Spiritual Formation Year (SFY) compound.  It was Fr. Ferdinand Maguiggad of the Archdiocese of Tuguegarao who facilitated their recollection.  The Asinilaw class stayed in the main building of the seminary (ICST) for their class recollection with Fr. Berlynden Dao-anis, the spiritual director of the Montañosa Formation Community as their guide.

The higher years had a separate venue for their recollection.  The Himig class had a trip to Abra (Diocese of Bangued).  It was at the Diocesan Social Action Center (DSAC) in Pidigan where the conferences were held.  Fr. Renante Bose, a priest of Bangued, led the seminarians to reflection and spiritual pondering.  The Tugon class traveled close north to Katib, San Juan, Ilocos Sur.  They had Fr. Segundino Cortez as their recollection facilitator.

After an almost two-day spiritual engagement, they returned to the seminary refreshed ready to continue on the remaining days of the formation year.

Students of UP Los Baños visit the seminary

The School of Environmental Science and Management of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (Laguna) in their field trip to the Ilocos Region visited ICST to gather information on religious institutions with programs related to care for the environment.  The group was composed of foreign and Filipino graduate students and was headed by Dr. Carmelita M. Rebancos, professor of the said university.

The group arrived in the afternoon of February 13 and was welcomed by Fr. Nick Vaquilar and seminarians Louiegene Arnold Valdez and June Caesar Ragonjan.  Both seminarians gave an orientation seminar to the group.   Since the group asked a discussion on the concrete activity of the seminary on her contribution to environment-related programs, the LET’S GLOW (Guard and Love Our World) program of the seminary was highlighted. The LET’S GLOW program aims to contribute in the care for the natural resources and environment.

The students and their professor were very much thankful for the accommodation rendered to them. They left the seminary after the celebration of the holy mass the following day.

The Future of the Past: Church Cultural Heritage 101

This was the theme of the 2nd Academic Pastoral Function held on February 12.  Fr. Ted Milan Torralba, Executive Secretary of the Permanent Committee for the Cultural Heritage of the Church in the Philippines was invited to facilitate the symposium.  He has been active in heritage administration, management and advocacy having served in the Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church in the Diocese of Tagbilaran, where he came from.

The speaker spoke of the basic ways on how to preserve heritage and the reason why there is a need to preserve the heritage of the Church; hence it was Church Cultural Heritage 101.  Fr. Torralba said that heritage is the bridge of the past and the future.  It is important then to conserve the past for it carries with it significance and it is an imperative to pass it to the next generation.

The morning conferences of February 12 were spent in the Aula Magna of ICST while the afternoon conference was held in the Metropolitan Cathedral of St. Paul the Apostle, in Vigan City.  The afternoon talk was more of an application type of the conferences done in the morning.

There were more than 50 participants who joined the symposium.  They came from Saint Benedict Institute (SBI), Saint Paul College (SPC), University of Northern Philippines (UNP), and religious sisters of Benedictine Nuns of the Eucharistic King (BNEK).The event was organized by the Commission on Academics headed by Fr. Lain Mayo, dean of the seminary.

HIMIG Class in Sinait, Ilocos Sur for Pastoral Management course

In the afternoon of January 29, Friday, the Himig class (T3) went to the Parish of St. Nicholas de Tolentino in Sinait, Ilocos Sur for their course on Pastoral Management under Rev. Fr. Albert Rabe, the parish priest.  The seminarians were housed in the different families near the parish convent.

Pastoral Management is a course that gives a view of and experience in running a parish.  The seminarians were introduced to the experience of the parish and they were made to be critical on the perennial issues besetting the place.    With their awareness of the situations in the parish, they were taught how to make modules and programs in response to the situations.

Fr. Albert Rabe has been teaching in ICST since 1980s.  He has been helping in the formation of future priests by guiding them in their parish exposure.   Seminarians under him are trained to be aware of and critical of the situations so that they could help in the transformation of society in the light of the Word of God.

After four days of being exposed to the course, the T3 seminarians returned back to ICST.

Retreat centers on the Word of God

On the occasion of the Second National Congress of the Clergy (NCC II), the seminarians of ICST underwent a four-day retreat for this second semester.  Fr. Jaimelito Gaelan, SVD who was the retreat facilitator led the seminarians into a reflective and prayerful encounter with God.

He centered his sharing and reflections on the Word of God.  He developed a theme on The Word of God in the Life and Mission of Future Priests.   The whole theme was divided into four structures: the Voice of the Word, the Face of the Word, the House of the Word and the Role of the Word.  He said that seminarians in the formation must be rooted in the Word of God and be reflections of the Word.

The retreat renewed the spiritual life of the seminarians.  More importantly, they saw and realized the importance of the Word in their life as future priests.   They were convinced that early in the formation, love for the Word is an imperative.

TIMPUYOG 2010 brings families together

A family that prays together stays together was a statement quoted by Fr. Rafael T. Cruz, Ph.D.  before finally ending his talk on The Culture of the Filipino Family on the first day of the Family Day in ICST.  Families are collaborators in the on-going formation of the seminarians.  Formation in ICST values the family of the seminarians.
From January 23-24, ICST celebrated the Family Day dubbed as TIMPUYOG.   Timpuyog is an Ilocano word for “gathering.”   Families of seminarians gathered together in the seminary for this two-day affair.  Family members started arriving early morning of January 23, while others from the nearby provinces came in the afternoon.  Almost 200 family members attended the occasion.  Families were together in listening to the rich input of Fr. Rafael T. Cruz, together in meals and together in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist.

A highlight of the said event was the family encounter during the evening of January 23.  This is a sacred moment where the seminarians engage in diaglogue with their respective families.  Each family went to a place where they found comfort and prayerful atmosphere.

This year’s theme for the occasion is Sharing Together, Binding Hearts, Joining Hands.  The Family Day ended with a lunch and a program on the second day, January 24.

Ilocandia sponsors this month’s Bible Service

Every third Thursday of the month is a Bible Service sponsored by the different formation communities.  This January the Ilocandia Formation Community was the sponsor.  After the gospel, the seminarians creatively portrayed the theme Neglect of the Poor is Neglect of Christ.  In their presentation, they employed the art of hand mime, thereby bringing to life the words: Hirap, Tulong, Pulubi, Awa, Unawa, Kristo.  The words themselves capture the cry of the poor for both physical and spiritual nourishment.  This month’s bible service exhorts constant concern and care for the lowly, neglected, and the abandoned. Fr. Berlynden Dao-anis presided over the celebration.

Medical-Dental-Optical Mission  in Puro, Caoayan, Ilocos Sur

On the Feast Day of Sto. Niño, January 17, 2010, the seminarians and formators of ICST, together with doctors of Ilocos Sur Medical Society, reached out to the community of Brgy. Puro, Caoayan, Ilocos Sur for a Medical-Dental-Optical mission.   The place is surrounded by a river and is reached only through a motorboat for around fifteen minutes.

Before the start of the Medical-Dental-Optical mission, the celebration of the Holy Mass was held in the barangay chapel.  Fr. Marlon Belmonte, a director of the Commission on Apostolate in ICST, led the community in the solemn celebration.   The Himig class (T3), which spearheaded in organizing the activity, sang during the solemn celebration.  After the mass, the people proceeded to and gathered in the basketball court of the barangay for check up and consultation with the doctors.

There were 220 individuals, both young and old, who availed the free check-up and consultation. A number of 16 doctors and 18 nurses helped in the mission. Asked how she feels doing such help to poor people, Dr. Georgina Andal said, “it is always nice to serve.” She added that the society has been conducting this mission monthly.  The Ilocos Sur Medical Society is headed by Dr. Gloria Lahoz, who was also present during the mission.

A program followed immediately after lunch. The head of the community, Captain Noel Amicay, expressed his thanks to the organizers of the mission as well as those who helped and assisted in making the mission successful.

HUBOG class comes home to ICST for thanksgiving

After four years since 2006, the Hubog class returned to ICST to offer their thanksgiving through the Holy Eucharist last January 11, 2010.  The members of the class shared a cup of joy as they saw each other, and thereby taking the occasion to dialogue with one another and reminisce their seminary days.  They arrived in the seminary early afternoon of Monday to play a basketball game with the fourth year class and the formators.  After four breathtaking quarters, the combined effort of the latter won over the Hubog class.

In the evening, the celebration of the Holy Eucharist was offered.  Rev. Fr. Julius Cuison of the Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan, a member of the Hubog class presided over the celebration.  His homily was centered on three important points: discernment on vocation, detachment from what is enslaving, and sharing in the mission of Christ.  He said, “Following the Lord is sharing in the mission of Christ.”  This mission is primarily the proclamation of the Gospel to all.

A short program was prepared after the dinner. Some members of the class were asked to share a message to the community.  Naturally, all were one in thanking ICST for preparing them to the priesthood.

There were twenty (20) members of the Hubog class who graduated in ICST on 2006.  Eighteen (18) of them are already ordained to the priesthood, and another to the deaconate.

Seminarians return back after Christmas break

After a three-week-long Christmas vacation, the seminarians are back in ICST to continue the last lap of the school year 2009-2010.  The said school year will come to its close three months from now.  In the evening of their arrival, January 03, 2010, they prayed the solemn vespers.  After the prayers, Rev. Fr. Nick Vaquilar, Rector, welcomed them with a joyful heart. Refreshed from the break, the seminarians resumed their classes on Monday, January 04, 2010.

Christmas break comes, seminarians on vacation

Spend time with your family are the words Fr. Nick A. Vaquilar, Rector of ICST, told his seminarians as they headed home for their Christmas vacation last December 13 (Sunday) after the post communion prayer of the celebration of the Holy Mass.
The Christmas vacation is an opportune time for the seminarians to be with their family, relatives and friends.  It is a season that binds together those who have been separated because of work and education.  Above all, it is an occasion to share one’s presence with the other members of the family and to feel their company.
After the Holy Mass, the seminarians headed home for their Christmas break. They will be back on January 3, 2010.

Through songs, ICST spreads the message of Christmas

Caroling is a Filipino Christmas tradition, and it has also been part of the ICST community to spread joy and the spirit of Christmas to people through rendition of Christmas songs.  This year, the caroling was spearheaded by the different classes. The Ubbog class (T1), Asinilaw class (T2), and Tugon Class (T4) went around Vigan City, while the Himig class (T3) serenaded the people of Bantay and Caoayan here in Ilocos Sur.

The proceeds of the caroling help the ICST Fund for financing the different activities and programs of the seminary.  This way of bringing the spirit of Christmas to people make them feel the love and generosity of God for sending his only Son to save us from our sinfulness.

Pasko: Pagdaralita, Pag-asa, Pilipino!

This is the theme of the 3rd Kapihan sponsored by the Cagayan Valley Formation Community on December 11, Friday.  With the disasters brought by the typhoons that hit the country recently, the Kapihan conveyed a message of hope for all Filipinos.  The lively presentations of the seminarians, personnel and formators in songs and dances made the night fun and entertaining.

It was during this event that the winners in the belen making contest were revealed. The Montañosa Formation Community was announced winner.  Also, the result of the second semester intramurals was proclaimed where the Asinilaw class (T2) was held the champion.

ICST remembers her Benefactors and Friends

Gratitude was the overwhelming tone of the ICST community during the Benefactors’ Night.  It was a night held to celebrate and remember the generosity of people who are helping in the formation of the seminarians through financial support. This occasion took place on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, December 08.

Rev. Fr. Adel Agcaoili, Director of Montañosa Formation Community, presided over the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, which opened the event.  After the Holy Eucharist, Fr. Lain Mayo formally launched the Belen-Making Contest featuring different versions of the nativity scene creatively made by the Ilocandia Formation Community, Montañosa Formation Community, Pangasinan Formation Community, and Seminary Formators and Personnel.  The announcement of the winners will take place on December 11, during the 3rd Kapihan and Christmas party. Immediately after the launching of the contest, dinner followed.  It was served in front of the seminary where tables were set on the seminary patios.

As way of expressing ICST’s gratitude to the many contributions of the benefactors to the formation of the seminarians, songs and dances were rendered by the seminarians and formators.  It was a night filled with music and dancing.  Dra. Georgina Andal, a benefactress of ICST, shared her thoughts on the celebration during the program.  The community also recognized Ms. Leilani Estepa, for significantly contributing in the field of information technology by updating the seminary website.

Formators, Seminarians head to Bantay for Marian walk

The cold breeze of December did not hinder the seminarians in waking up early in order to catch the six o’clock Marian walk on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception last December 8.  The seminarians and formators headed to St. Augustine Parish in Bantay, Ilocos Sur. It is in this parish where the statue of the Nuestra Señora de Caridad (Our Lady of Charity) is enshrined.

Wearing their white cassock, the seminarians devoutly prayed the Holy Rosary on their way to Bantay.  Some carried placards with themes on justice, peace and honest elections. It was in the vicinity of the parish church where they ate their breakfast.

ICST Year levels clash for Theolympics

The second semester Theolympics 2009 was formally opened in the afternoon of December 6 at the basketball court of ICST by Rev. Fr. Nick A. Vaquilar.  There were four teams competing for the intramurals: Ubbog (First Year), Asinilaw (Second Year), Himig (Third Year), and Tugon (Fourth Year).  The Tugon class was joined by the Sibol class (Spiritual Formation Year).   Before the opening program, the four teams with their own muses had a short parade in front of the seminary.   Already at the start, the seminarians were enthusiastic to play and participate in the intramurals.
During the opening program, Sem. Clemence Doria gave a brief explanation of the theme, “How good and pleasant it is for kindred to live in unity.” He said that despite the different groupings, the sports activity is one way of bringing together these different groups and it is pleasant to see them one and united.

The intramurals, which was started in the afternoon of December 6 ended on the morning of December 8.  Although the activity was held within two days, the seminarians enjoyed playing with each other, both the outdoor and indoor games.  Not only did they benefit physically, they, too, were enriched by valuing sportsmanship and camaraderie.

The Asinilaw class (Second Year) was announced as the over all winner for this semester’s intramurals.  The Ubbog class (First Year) got the second place, the Himig class (Third Year) ended up being in the third place, while the Tugon class (Fourth Year) with the Sibol class (SFY) ranked last.

Apostolate Festival

Lay faithful from the different apostolate areas of the seminarians gathered together last November 29 in ICST to celebrate this year’s Apostolate Festival with the theme Makipaset a kas pamilia, Agbiag a kas Gimong, Agturong Pagarian ti Dios (Join as a Family, Live as a Community, Towards the Kingdom of God).

This festival was a whole day affair.  In the morning, ballgames, both indoor and outdoor games were held where students from different schools in Vigan played and competed.  The emphasis of the sports activities above all was to promote camaraderie and to foster unity among students.  Aside from the sports activities, a bible quiz bee and poster making contest also took place in the morning. A program was prepared for the afternoon. Selected participants rendered their presentations that entertained the audience.  Fr. Nick Vaquilar, in his message, thanked those who came for the festival adding that “they are collaborators in the formation of the seminarians.”

Seminarians facilitate in the Marian Congress

The diocese of San Fernando de La Union celebrated the golden anniversary of the canonical coronation of the Our Lady of Namacpacan in Luna, La Union last November 24, 2009.  A day prior to the occasion, November 23, a Marian Congress was held inside the parish church.

During the said congress, ICST professors discussed three separate topics on Mary.   Fr. Nick Vaquilar, the first speaker, talked about Mary in the Scriptures.  Fr. Robert Collado came next to give the talk on Mary in the Church Tradition. Fr. William Antonio was the last to share on the Role of Mary in Social Transformation. The discussions aimed at establishing an objective presentation of Mary that may lead to a profound appreciation of who she is and deeper devotion to her.

The ICST seminarians actively involved themselves in facilitating the said event.  They also led in the group sharings held after the talk.  Aside from seminarians, other delegates coming from the different parishes of the diocese attended the congress.
