June 5-9: Fullness of Life (Annual Retreat)

“Seek first the Kingdom of God.” It is always proper to put God first in our life. The whole ICST Community started this school year 2007-2008 with a retreat facilitated by Fr. Albert Rabe. The general theme for our retreat was Telling the story of Jesus in His Mission of the Kingdom. In order to tell the story of Jesus, we must search and follow His will and to own His mission as our mission. The Kingdom Mission is to bring the Kingdom of God here on earth. This Kingdom of God is the experience of the Fullness of Life. However, this fullness of life is not present yet as manifested in the poverty groups, the widening gap between the rich and the poor, the experience of injustice, economic poverty, political imbalance and political dynasty and the dehumanizing situation.

Fr. Rabe challenged us as he presented the historical Jesus. He who walked on this earth and who experienced the injustices in the life of the poor. He always opted for the poor for He is their liberator. He wants all people to experience the Kingdom of God – justice, peace, fullness of life.Fr. Rabe also pointed out that poverty is never a product of fate but it has something to do with our social structure. The Church needs to opt for the poor. Option for the poor is option for humanity. It is the option for the Kingdom mission, option of Jesus, option of His followers, option of the Church, option for justice and liberation. And as we opt for the poor, we are to expect conflict in our ministry. But conflicts are essential in the Kingdom mission because it’s in creating conflict that we shake the comfortable life of the people. Critical social awareness is also important for the Kingdom mission.

The different formation communities take turns in sponsoring the celebration of the Holy Mass with inculturation and sharing of the rich culture and religiosity of each region.

News brief on the Community Workshop and Election of Officers

After an inspiring retreat, the whole community engaged in the annual workshop held last June 11 to 14, 2007. The workshop aimed at presenting, evaluating and discussing the different aspects of the Formation Program of the Immaculate Conception School of Theology. This endeavor began with the reading of the ICST Vision-Mission Statement which proved to be a very valuable reminder and indispensable guide throughout the duration of the activity. The formal discussions were initiated by the Rector, Fr. John Habawel, who gave a general introduction and overview of the things that were supposed to be discussed. The other able formators led the discussions for the other aspects of formation. The afternoons of the said activity were spent for the dialogue among the members of the different Formation Communities regarding issues that were tackled in the mornings. Results of these discourses were presented to the entire community the following day. Questions that arose were responded to by the Fathers and deliberation followed with the Fathers and the Student Council a few days later.

The four-day Workshop concluded with the election of the new set of officers for the first semester of the school year. This semester’s Student Council Officers is headed by Sem. Leo Nedic of the Diocese of San Fernando of La Union.

The Holy Spirit Mass and Induction of Officers

Last June 16, 2007, the whole seminary community celebrated the Holy Spirit Mass. This marked the official start of the formation year 2007-2008. The mass was presided over by his Excellency, the Most Reverend Ernesto Salgado, the archbishop of Nueva Segovia and at the same time the chairman of the board of directors of ICST. Present priests who concelebrated with him were the seminary formators and most of the seminary professors. In his homily, the good archbishop accentuated the importance of obedience in formation noting in particular the role of the Holy Spirit, the primary formator in seminary formation.

In the said Holy Spirit Mass, the seminary formators and professors pledged their commitment of service to the Church of Northern Luzon and orthodoxy in their teaching. This was highlighted by their solemn profession of the Nicene-Constantinopolitan Creed. Moreover, it was also the occasion for the induction and symbolic turnover of the key of responsibilities to the new elected Student Council officers. The outgoing general beadle, seminarian Mark Ventura turned over the key of responsibility to the incoming general beadle, seminarian Leo Nedic.

The new general beadle, seminarian Leo Nedic rallied the community in owning the vision-mission of ICST and putting this into practice. He used the metaphor of dogs chasing after a rabbit.

June 26: A Celebration of Life

One of the common characteristics of Filipinos is the love to celebrate life. It’s a way of showing gratitude and joy for God’s blessings and goodness to us.

This typical behavior was once again manifested through the “mañanita” which the Nuestra Señora de Caridad Formation Community rendered, with the simple birthday program they prepared during their regional community breakfast for Rev. Fr. Ramelo Somera, their Regional Director, who turned 35.

The big community joined Fr. Ramelo in thanking God for the gift of life through a big community program together with some members of the Abra clergy, the seminary professors and Formators and the Most Rev. Leopoldo Jaucian, his beloved bishop.

Fr Ramelo’s message during the program centered on his metaphorical insight of life using basketball as his medium. According to him, 70 years is the average lifespan of male nowadays and since Fr. Ramelo is now 35, he is already halfway of the average age which he calls the “second half of life” He highlighted that the 2nd half of basketball is a time to exert more effort and for one to give his best shot for the end is near.

The program ended with a solemn blessing by the Most Rev. Leopoldo Jaucian.
